Panes

To work with panes, know these key principles.

  • a pane is identified as a pane because it has a title bar
  • only one pane is active at any time and the active pane can be identified because its title bar is darker blue; all inactive panes will have lighter blue title bars
  • the contents of the toolbar and the Control Panel are specific to the active pane and change when the type of active pane changes
  • panes can be arranged in whatever manner you choose

There is one additional feature that distinguishes some pane types from others:

  • there may be multiple instances of the Editor, View, and Listing panes
  • there may be only one instance of the Project, Console, State Record, iPython, Extrusion, and Building Blocks panes (the last two are specific to FLAC3D)

Panes of the first type are listed on the Documents menu (so-named because they comprise user-created or user-requested material). Panes of the second type are listed on the Panes menu.

Actions on Panes

The following topics summarize how to handle panes. The order is somewhat logical: the later topics are more comprehensible in light of the material presented in earlier ones.

Terminology Note

The Editor pane type contains data files (any text files, actually). A View pane contains a plot. “Editor” and “view” designate the type of pane, and the terms “data file” and “plot” refer to the contents of the pane. The program documentation adheres consistently to these distinctions but, at times, depending on context, such terms (e.g., plot vs. view) may be used interchangeably.
